Find Your Story Within Contest – Week 2

January 20, 2012

The week 2 prompt is up and ready to inspire your writing! This week’s prompt is focused on dialogue.

“Dialogue is a way of showing the nature of a relationship without explaining it.”

Convincing dialogue has to convey character, be authentic in diction and tone, and not draw attention to itself any more than a new pair of shoes should distract from a great outfit.

In no more than 250 words, write a phone conversation between two close friends that gives us a picture of who they are.  Do they use slang? Are they polite? Does one have an accent or stammer?  Are they complaining? Gossiping? Does one interrupt? Can you convey their ages, their history, their level of intimacy, and their emotional investment in their conversation?  What’s at stake?  Give the reader a picture of who these people are.

To enter, send an email to thestorywithinbook@gmail.com with your full name, email address and written entry. Entries can be within the body of the email or attached in a Word document. Week two entries are due on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Laura will choose a winner each week. The week two winner will be announced on Friday, January 27.
